The United Nations General Assembly, in a resolution passed in 2001, called for this day to “be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day;”
The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 1981 to observe the third Tuesday of September month as the International Day of Peace.
Later, on 7 September 2001, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to observe 21 September as the International Day of Peace.

The theme of the International Day of Peace is Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals.
