India-Australia Space Partnership: Five New Industry Agreements Signed

India and Australia have signed five new industry partnerships to strengthen cooperation in India's private space sector. The agreements were finalised on the sidelines of the 9th edition of the Bengaluru Space Expo as part of an Australian trade delegation's engagement with India's growing space industry. The deals cover satellite communications, research collaboration, and launch and re-entry technologies, areas where both countries see rising commercial and strategic value.

What Does the India-Australia Partnership Contain?

The five agreements bring together government bodies, universities, and private companies from both nations:

• Satellite Communications: Australian firm LatConnect 60 has partnered with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO's commercial arm, to explore satellite communication opportunities.
• Research and Education: The University of Western Australia has joined hands with the Space Industry Association of India (SIA-India) for joint research, development, and academic exchange.
• Launch and Re-entry Technology: Australian company Space Machines has signed three separate agreements with Indian firms Angel Technologies, Red Balloon Aerospace, and Inbound Aerospace to work on launch systems and re-entry technologies.

These partnerships reflect how India's private space sector has matured over the past few years, drawing stronger interest from global investors and industry players than it did six to eight years ago.

Bilateral Space Framework of India and Australia

These fresh industry tie-ups don't stand alone; they build on an existing government-level framework between the two countries. The Australian Space Agency and ISRO already share a Memorandum of Understanding on space cooperation, and both nations have flagged space and technology as priority areas under their broader strategic partnership.

To back this up financially, Australia has committed roughly AUD 20 million in grants for companies collaborating with Indian partners, while its National Reconstruction Fund supports investment in domestic space firms. Trade ties beyond space are growing too; bilateral trade between India and Australia has crossed AUD 50 billion, with Austrade supporting over 1,400 businesses in India and South Asia over the past year. Critical minerals and rare earths have also emerged as a fresh area for cooperation between the two countries.
