India and the global community observe Infant Protection Day every year on November 7. The global health campaign highlights the critical need to protect infants, safeguard early childhood development, and reduce infant mortality rates.
The initial year of life represents the most vulnerable phase of human growth. Infants depend completely on primary caregivers for essential nutrition, physical safety, emotional comfort, and preventive healthcare.
The first three months of life initiate rapid developmental milestones in motor control, sensory processing, and early communication skills.
Global child survival statistics show substantial long-term progress alongside continuing health challenges across developing regions.
Global newborn deaths during the first month of life dropped from approximately 5 million in 1990 to 2.4 million in 2019. Although this decrease demonstrates progress in healthcare access, neonatal deaths still account for a large proportion of overall under-five child mortality.
Infant Protection Day began in response to rising child mortality worldwide, especially in developing countries. India first observed this day in 1990 to promote child healthcare and protection. At that time, malnutrition, poor sanitation, and limited medical facilities threatened infant survival. The day highlights the progress made in protecting children and reminds us of the need for continued efforts to ensure every child’s survival and healthy development.
