Serbia Political Shift: Progressive Party Loses 14-Year Grip on Power

Serbia witnessed a historical political transition as the right-wing Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) lost its 14-year grip on power following parliamentary elections. The election ended the long-standing dominance of long-serving leader Aleksandar Vucic.
A youth-backed opposition movement, known as the Students’ List, defeated the ruling party after a sustained campaign focused on ending corruption, protecting democratic institutions, and driving economic reform.
President Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat following intense public bidding across polling stations. The election outcome reflected widespread dissatisfaction with the administration, transforming nearly two years of continuous public demonstrations into electoral success.
Public anger spiked following a major infrastructure tragedy in 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station, killing 16 people. Demonstrators attributed the structural failure to systemic corruption, lax oversight, and inadequate safety audits.
University students spearheaded demonstrations for nearly two years. They eventually organized the non-partisan Students’ List to challenge the SNS.
While university students organized and guided the movement, they adopted an unconventional ballot strategy: no active students stood as candidates. Instead, the movement selected respected external professionals—including academic experts, athletes, agricultural leaders, and artists. This strategy broadened their public appeal across diverse demographic groups.
The election brought unprecedented participation across both domestic polling centers and international diaspora voting stations operating on Serbian local time.

The defeat of the ruling SNS reshapes the domestic and regional political landscape. Aleksandar Vucic had previously served as Prime Minister and President, exerting deep influence over state institutions.
The victory of the Students' List demonstrates how sustained, youth-led civic protests can transform into effective parliamentary movements. The incoming assembly faces the responsibility of translating electoral support into policy execution and transparent governance.
