Ladakh has become India’s first fully organic Union Territory. On Sunday, 25 October 2026, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena made the declaration, praising the farmers of Leh and Kargil for going chemical-free.

The LG announced that Ladakh is now India’s first 100% organic Union Territory, and the status comes with certification. He called it a proud moment for the region and the whole country. In his words, the milestone is more than a title. It’s a promise to protect the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, keep traditional farming alive and give farmers better livelihoods.

He also tied the move to the Prime Minister’s vision of chemical-free farming. Ladakh now wants to be a model for sustainable high-altitude agriculture.

How Ladakh Became a 100% Organic Union Territory?

1. The change came through a phased, multi-year effort across both Leh and Kargil districts.
2. Synthetic fertilisers, chemical pesticides and harmful soil additives were slowly phased out.
3. In March 2026, consignments of organic fertiliser were flagged off to villages, so farmers had them before the sowing season.
4. In July 2026, the LG banned the procurement, distribution, sale, marketing and use of chemical and synthetic fertilisers across Ladakh.
5. The ban is meant to protect organic certification, soil and water, and the long-term health of farming.
6. Ladakh’s traditional farming practices and unique agro-ecological conditions made the shift easier.
