On International Women's Day on 8 March 2024, the Indian Army announced the formation of 2 Army Girls Sports Companies (AGSC). AGSC will be formed in a phased manner by the Indian Army keeping in mind the national vision of women empowerment and demonstration of women power.

Two Centers of Excellence identified:

  • The Army has identified two of its Centers of Excellence for the operation of these companies. These are the Army Marksmanship Unit in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, and the Army Sports Institute in Pune.
  • Through this, girls selected from across the country will be imparted education and will also be made champions in sports.
  • These girls who have graduated from these institutions will be able to get direct entry into the army.

These companies will start from April:

  • In a statement issued by the Army on March 8, it was said that AGSC will start from April 1.
  • Under this, young talent will be identified and will be trained for sports along with formal education.
  • The girls trained from here will be considered eligible for admission in the following military institutions: Apart from this, girls selected under AGSC
    • Agniveer and Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO)
    • Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO)
  • These girls will be eligible for direct recruitment in the army under these schemes.

Training for sports will also be available in AGSC:

  • Through AGSC, girls will be given training in shooting, archery, athletics, boxing and weightlifting.
  • These AGSCs have world-class training infrastructure and sports medicine centers, rehabilitation facilities, and coaching facilities.
  • The girls selected for training here will also benefit from the experience of the senior army team and athletes. Because experienced athletes also train here in these training centres.
  • The Indian Army is already running such sports companies for boys.
  • The young players emerging from here have so far won medals for the country in many international competitions.

Establishment of two National Centers of Excellence for Women:

  • Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur has announced the establishment of two National Centers of Excellence for Women on the occasion of International Women's Day.
  • These National Centers of Excellence cover 23 focused priority themes. Where Indian athletes get the opportunity to win medals in competitions like the Asian Games and the Olympics.
  • Sports is a state subject, but still the central government is keen on the upliftment of sports in the country.
  • The Central Government is collaborating with the State Governments and has been asked to identify three major sports. So that the Center has a roadmap and information about which state will promote hockey, boxing and athletics.
