Gulveer Singh breaks 16-year national record in the 10,000-metre race

Gulveer Singh breaks 16-year national record in the 10,000-metre race Sport 9 min read

Gulveer Singh of Uttar Pradesh broke the 16-year-longstanding national record in the men’s 10,000-metre race at the Ten 2024 athletics meet, held in San Juan Capistrano, California, USA, on 17 March 2024. He clocked 27 minutes 41.81 seconds to break the record set by Surendra Singh, who clocked  28 minutes 02.89 seconds in 2008. 

With a time of 27 minutes 41.81 seconds, Gulveer finished second behind American Drew Hunter, who clocked 27 minutes 38.87 seconds.

However, the longest-standing national record is in the men’s marathon, which was set by Shivnath Singh in 1978. His winning time was 2 hours and 12 minutes.

Despite being the first Indian to run a 10,000-metre race under 28 minutes, Gulveer Singh failed to qualify for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics Paris. Gulveer Singh won the bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Manikanta Hoblidhar holds the 100-metre record with a timing of 10.23 seconds, which he set at the National Open Athletics Championships held in Bengaluru in 2023.

Dutee Chand holds the 100-meter national record with a timing of 11.17 seconds, which she achieved at the Indian Grand Prix IV at Patiala in 2021.

200 metres national record

Amlan Borgohain set the national record in 200 metres at Federation Cup 2022 with a time of  20.52 seconds. 

Saraswati Saha holds the record in the women’s category with a timing of 22.82. She set the record at the National Circuit Meet in Ludhiana in 2002.

400 metres national record

Muhammed Anas Yahiya holds the national record with a time of 45.21 seconds, set at the  Kladno Athletics meet in the Czech Republic in 2019.

Hima Das holds the record for the women's category. She set the national record at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, with a time of 50.79 seconds.

800 metres national record

Jinson Johnson holds the men's 800 m record. He clocked 1:45.65 minutes at the 2018 National Inter-State Championship in Guwahati.

In the women's category, Tintu Luka holds the record with a timing of 1:59.17 minutes, which she achieved at the 2010 Continental Cup in Split, Croatia.

1500 metres national record

Jinson Johnson holds the record in  1500m with a timing of 3:35.24 minutes, which he set at the ISTAF Berlin meet in 2019.

Harmilan Bains holds the record in the women's category with a timing of 4:05.39 minutes. She won at the 2021 National Open Championships at Warangal.

3000m national record.

3000 metres national record

Surendra Singh holds the national record in 3000m with 7 minutes and 50.31 seconds, which he achieved at Twickenham, United Kingdom, in 2008.

In the women’s section, Parul Chaudhary holds the record. She set the national record with a timing of  8 minutes and 57.19 seconds at the Los Angeles athletics meet in 2022.

5000 metres national record

Avinash Sable holds the record in the men's 5000 metres. He clocked 13 minutes and 19.30 seconds in a 2023 Los Angeles athletics meet.

Parul Chaudhary holds the record with a timing of 15 minutes and 10.35 seconds, achieved at the Los Angeles athletics meet in 2023.

10000 metres national record

Gulveer Singh set the national record in 10000 metres with 27 minutes and 41.81 seconds at the Ten meet in California, USA, in 2024.

In the women's category, Preeja Sreedharan holds the record for 31 minutes and 50.47 seconds, achieved at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Marathon national record

Shivnath Singh set the national record in a marathon in 1978 in Jalandhar, with the timing of 2 hours and 12 minutes.

O.P. Jaisha holds the record in the women's category, with a time of 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 43 seconds, set at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China.

Half marathon national record

Avinash Sable holds the men's half-marathon record. He completed the 2020 Delhi Half Marathon 2020  race in 1 hour:00:30-seconds.

Suriya Loganathan holds the women's half marathon and completed the 2017 Delhi Half Marathon race in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 31 seconds. 

20km race walk national record

Akshdeep Singh holds the record in the 20km race walk, timing 1 hour, 19 minutes and 38 seconds. He set the record at the Indian Open Race Walking Competition 2024 in Chandigarh. 

Priyanka Goswami holds the record in the women's category, with a timing of 1 hour, 28 minutes and 45 seconds, which she achieved at the 2021 National Race Walking Championships in Ranchi.

35 km race walk national record

Ram Baboo bettered his 35 km race walk national record at the Dudinska 50 2023 meet in Dudince, Slovakia, with a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes and 56 seconds.

Manju Rani holds the national record in the women’s category. She clocked 2 hours 57 minutes, and 54 seconds at the National Open Race Walking Championships 2023 in Ranchi.

50km race walk national record

Sandeep Kumar set the national record in the 50km race walk, with a timing of 3 hours 55 minutes and 59.5 seconds at the 2017 National Race Walking Championships in New Delhi.

Long jump national record

Jeswin Aldrin holds the national record in the men's long jump with a jump of  8.42 metres at the Indian Open Throws Competition 2023 at Bellary, Karnataka.

In the women’s category, Anju Bobby George holds the record, with a jump of 6.83 metres, achieved at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

High jump national record

Tejaswin Shankar holds the national record. He jumped 2.29 metres at the athletics event held in Texas, the United States of America.

Sahana Kumari holds the record among women with a jump of 1.92 metres at the 2012 National Inter-State Championships,held in Hyderabad.
