India and Mauritius Sign G2G MoU on Oil and Gas Cooperation
Updated: 21 Aug 2026
2 Min Read

India and Mauritius have signed a government-to-government (G2G) Memorandum of Understanding on oil and gas cooperation on 20th August, 2026, strengthening energy ties between the two countries. Alongside this, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has also signed a separate five-year agreement with the State Trading Corporation of Mauritius to supply petrol, diesel, and jet fuel to the island nation.
This agreement builds on an energy relationship between the two countries that dates back to 2001, when Indian Oil first began serving Mauritius through Indian Oil Mauritius Limited. The timing of this deal is also significant, coming at a time when global energy markets have been under pressure due to conflict in West Asia and disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has affected fuel availability in several regions. By locking in supply through this agreement, Mauritius gains a reliable energy partner in India during a period of global uncertainty.
India currently has a refining capacity of around 258 million tonnes, making it the fourth-largest refiner in the world. Beyond meeting its own domestic fuel needs, India also exports petroleum products to several countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives, along with parts of Southeast Asia and Europe. In fact, Indian refiners exported petroleum products worth $16.74 billion in just the first quarter of this fiscal year. Looking ahead, the government is aiming to expand the country's refining capacity to more than 309 million tonnes annually by 2032, further strengthening India's position as a major global fuel supplier.
