About National Film Awards
The National Film Awards was established in 1954, and it has since become one of the country's most prestigious and highly anticipated events. The awards ceremony is graced by the Hon'ble President of India, who presents the awards to the winners, and culminates in the showcasing of the award-winning films for the public.
The National Film Awards have come a long way since their inception, with the number of awards increasing over the years. For the first six years, the Regional Best Award was given to the National Best Film. Additionally, two President's Gold Medals, two certificates of merit, and silver medals were awarded to a dozen regional films.
In 1968, separate awards were instituted for artists and technicians, with Nargis Dutt and Uttam Kumar being the first actress and actor to receive the Best Actress (then called Urvashi) and Best Actor (then called Bharat) Awards respectively.
The awards are presented in three categories: Features, Non-Features, and Best Writing on Cinema.
The Features and Non-Features categories are meant to acknowledge excellence in various cinematic achievements.
Meanwhile, the 'Best Writing on Cinema' section is intended to promote the study and appreciation of cinema as an art form.
It aims to disseminate information, publish various books, articles, reviews, newspaper coverage, and studies, and encourage critical appreciation of the art form.
