Sikkim has retained its position as India's richest state by per capita income, according to Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data. The northeastern state recorded a GSDP per capita of ₹7,07,179 in FY 2023-24, around 327% of the national average, despite its tiny population base. Bihar sits at the opposite end, with a GSDP per capita of just ₹68,624, roughly 32% of the national figure.
Sikkim leads, followed by Goa, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Telangana. Among states with a population above three crore, Telangana ranks highest, ahead of Karnataka, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Three South Indian states feature in the top 10, with the remaining two in the top 20.

Sikkim's small population spreads its economic output thinly, naturally lifting the per-person figure. Add to that its reliance on hydropower generation, a booming tourism industry, organic farming exports, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, along with heavy central funding tied to its special category status; together, these factors have pushed Sikkim's relative income to nearly 3.3 times the national average.
