People across South India will celebrate Karnataka Rajyotsava on November 1, 2026. The grand festival marks the historic unification of Kannada-speaking regions under a single administrative boundary. Citizens honor their rich linguistic identity, classical literature, and vibrant cultural traditions on this day.
The state will celebrate its 71st Rajyotsava celebration (Statehood) on November 1, 2026. The milestone event highlights 70 years since the unification of Mysore State in 1956. It also honors the official adoption of the state name Karnataka in 1973.
Known also as Kannada Rajyotsava or Karnataka Formation Day, the state government declares the occasion a statutory public holiday. Global Kannadiga diaspora organizations simultaneously host cultural conventions worldwide.
Before independence, colonial authorities divided Kannada-speaking communities across fragmented administrative domains. Regions belonged to the Bombay Presidency, Madras Presidency, Hyderabad Nizam State, and the princely state of Mysore.
Litterateur Aluru Venkata Rao spearheaded the famous Karnataka Ekikarana movement. He mobilized public sentiment to unite all Kannada-speaking territories into one state. Following national linguistic state reorganization, India formally merged these regions with Mysore State on November 1, 1956.
However, northern citizens felt the name "Mysore" failed to reflect the regional heritage of Canara and North Karnataka. Listening to public demands, Chief Minister Devaraj Urs officially renamed the state Karnataka on November 1, 1973.
Karnataka Rajyotsava unites diverse communities around a shared heritage. The festival honors classical art forms, Carnatic music, Yakshagana theatre, and ancient literature.
Educational campuses, government secretariats, and corporate headquarters hold special assemblies. The celebrations encourage youth to preserve the Kannada language while recognizing visionaries driving state development.
The entire state decorates public squares in dual colors using the official red and yellow Karnataka flag.
Global technology leaders in Bengaluru actively participate in local culture during November. Multinationals including Infosys, Wipro, IBM, Accenture, Robert Bosch, and Thomson Reuters organize employee cultural sessions.
Engineers and corporate staff wear red-and-yellow-themed attire, learn Kannada basics, and host internal traditional music programs. Schools hold essay competitions, elocution contests, and drama showcases to honor regional history.
