BRO Builds World’s Highest Motorable Road at Mag La in Ladakh

Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has surpassed its own Guinness World Record by constructing the world's highest motorable road at the Mag La Pass, 19,400 feet above sea level in Ladakh. This surpasses the previous record set in 2021 at Umling La (19,024 feet).

• In a historic achievement, Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has constructed the world's highest motorable road at the Mag La Pass in Ladakh.
• Under the leadership of Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, the BRO team hoisted the national and BRO flags at the site. Part of the Likaru-Mag La-Fukche route, this new road holds strategic importance and establishes a third major axis up to Fukche village near the border. Offering mesmerizing views of the Indus Valley, it will also promote tourism in Ladakh.
• Constructed under Project Himank, the newly built Likaru-Mag La-Fukche road strengthens India’s defense preparedness and opens new opportunities for adventure tourism.
• This road provides an important third axis from Hanle to Fukche, significantly improving the movement of soldiers and civilians in one of the country's most remote and strategically sensitive areas.

Importance of Ladakh

• The importance of Ladakh lies in its geographical location—it is bordered by China’s Xinjiang and Tibet regions in the east and Pakistan-occupied areas in the west, making it a significant buffer zone for India’s northern frontier.
• After the clashes in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, this region became the center of global attention, highlighting the lack of infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. Since then, New Delhi has accelerated efforts to address this gap.
• Over the past five years, India has initiated large-scale efforts to upgrade roads, bridges, tunnels, and airstrips along its border. In Ladakh alone, BRO has completed dozens of strategic projects, including the Nimu-Padum-Darcha road, Zojila tunnel, and Nyoma airstrip upgrade.
• The Mag La Pass road adds another crucial link, improving access to forward areas near Demchok and Chumar, where Indian forces maintain key posts.
• The Mag La Pass road could also transform Ladakh’s economy. The route offers expansive views of the Indus Valley and passes near Hanle, home to India’s Dark Sky Reserve and an emerging hub for astro-tourism.

Project Himank

• Himank, also known as Project Himank, is a project under India’s Ministry of Defence’s Border Roads Organisation. It was established in August 1985 under the India-China Border Road Project to facilitate road infrastructure development in parts of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.
• It is known for constructing some of the world’s highest motorable roads at Khardung La, Tanglang La, and Chang La passes.

Border Roads Organisation

• The Border Roads Organisation celebrates its foundation day on 7 May. Established in 1960 with only two projects—Project Tusker (now Vartak) in the east and Project Beacon in northern India—BRO has now grown into a vibrant organisation with 18 projects across 11 states and three union territories.
• In 2023-24, BRO completed 125 infrastructure projects, including the construction of Sela tunnel on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang road in Arunachal Pradesh.
• BRO is an Indian executive force under the Ministry of Defence. BRO’s motto is “Shramen Sarvam Sadhyam,” which means “Everything can be achieved through hard work.”
