India’s First Government Hospital-Based AI Clinic Inaugurated

India’s first government hospital-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) clinic has been inaugurated at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

• India’s first government hospital-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) clinic has been inaugurated at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
• This step is being considered a major and significant achievement not only for Uttar Pradesh but for the entire Indian healthcare sector.
• A major and historic change has taken place in India’s government healthcare system. A new step has been taken to make government hospitals more modern and technology-based so that patients can receive better treatment with the help of advanced tools.

First government AI clinic

• The AI clinic was inaugurated online by the Additional Director General of Health Services of the Government of India. This clinic has been established under the GIMS Centre for Medical Innovation, with the objective of providing AI-based healthcare facilities directly to doctors and patients in a government hospital.
• With the collaboration of prestigious institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and IIIT Lucknow, this AI clinic is set to become a major centre for education and research. It will focus on medical imaging, clinical decision support systems and data-driven healthcare services.

GIMS, Greater Noida

• The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida is an autonomous institution established by the Uttar Pradesh government on 15 February 2016, built on the model of SGPGI Lucknow. It provides medical education (MBBS/PG) and a 500-bed hospital.

Early concepts related to AI

• 1950: Alan Turing published "Computing Machinery and Intelligence", proposing the Turing Test for machine intelligence.
• 1956: John McCarthy coined the term "Artificial Intelligence" at the Dartmouth Workshop, officially marking the beginning of the field.
• 1950s–60s: Early AI focused on symbolic reasoning, logic and problem-solving (for example, Arthur Samuel’s checkers-playing program, Alan Newell and Herbert Simon’s Logic Theorist).
• 1960s: Joseph Weizenbaum created ELIZA, one of the first chatbots.
• 1997: IBM’s Deep Blue defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov, demonstrating AI’s decision-making power.
• 2000–2010s: Advances in machine learning, especially deep learning (neural networks), achieved major breakthroughs in perception, NLP and autonomous systems.
• 2010 to present: Rapid growth with applications such as virtual assistants (Siri, Alexa), facial recognition, self-driving cars and advanced language models (ChatGPT, Google Gemini).
