IEC 89th General Meeting Begins in India, Experts from 100+ Nations

The 89th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), based in London, is being hosted by Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India. This is the fourth time India is hosting the prestigious IEC General Meeting.

• The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced that India will host the 89th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi from 15 to 19 September 2025.
• In this event, more than 2,000 experts from over 100 countries will come together to deliberate on setting international electrotechnical standards that will promote a sustainable, fully electrified and connected world.
• After 1960, 1997 and 2013, this is the fourth time India is hosting the prestigious IEC General Meeting.
• The opening ceremony will be inaugurated by Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Minister of New and Renewable Energy Mr. Prahlad Joshi, while Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal will inaugurate the IEC GM exhibition at Bharat Mandapam.
• This exhibition will be the largest of its kind in India in the electrotechnical sector, showcasing innovations in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics and IT manufacturing, and it will provide a global networking platform for Indian start-ups.
• India will also serve as the global secretariat for standardisation in the field of Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), which is an important area for clean and pollution-free energy solutions.

International Electrotechnical Commission

• The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was established in 1906 in London with the aim of setting common standards for electrical and electronic technologies.
• The 88th General Meeting (GM) of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) was held from 21-25 October, 2024 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Lok Sabha Speaker Inaugurates Women Empowerment Conference in Tirupati

• Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the two-day national conference of the Parliamentary and Legislative Committee on Women’s Empowerment in Tirupati city, Andhra Pradesh, on 14 September 2025. He also inaugurated an exhibition and released a souvenir on this occasion.
• Mr. Birla said that the first national conference of committees on women’s empowerment represents a historic moment in India’s democratic journey.
• The two-day conference is being held on the theme “Women-Led Development for a Developed India,” with special focus on “gender-sensitive budgeting” and “empowering women to face the challenges of emerging technologies.”
• The deliberations will focus on strengthening women’s leadership, increasing participation in governance, ensuring inclusive policies and advancing a vision of an India where women are not only beneficiaries, but also key creators of national development.
