Indian men’s cricket team captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket in a social media post on 7 May 2025. However, he said he would be available to play in one-day internationals (ODIs). Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20 Cricket after India won the 9th ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the United States of America.
Rohit Sharma made his test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in November 2013. His last test match was against Australia at Melbourne, December 2024.
Rohit Sharma has struggled in Test cricket recently. In the last eight test matches played against New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Australia, he averaged just 10.93 and only once scored a half-century.
Under his captaincy, India won the series against Bangladesh 2-0 while losing to New Zealand 3-0 and Australia 3-1.
His performance against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Series, played in Australia from December 2024 to January 2025, was very disappointing. Due to his poor form, he dropped himself from the team in the last test match against Australia.
After the Australian tour, Rohit Sharma led India to their third ICC Champions Trophy title in March 2025, defeating New Zealand in the final. However, his poor form in Test cricket led to his decision to quit.
Rohit Sharma made his debut for India at the T20 International against Ireland in Belfast in June 2007.
Rohit Sharma, who plays for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, was once considered one of the most talented batsmen in India, along with Virat Kohli.
His initial performance in international cricket was disappointing. In 2012, he started opening in ODIs, and since then, he has become a regular feature of the Indian team.
Record
He has played 67 tests and scored 4301 runs with an average of 40.57. He has 12 test centuries and 18 half-centuries. His highest score in a test match was 212 against South Africa.
He captained India in 24 test matches, of which India won 12, lost nine, and drew 3 matches. He replaced Virat Kohli as Indian captain in the series against Sri Lanka in February 2022.
