‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma crosses 600 sixes in International Cricket

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma broke several records during India’s win against the Ireland team in the opening match of the 9th ICC T 20 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States of America(USA) and the West Indies cricket boards.

Rohit Sharma, also popularly called “Hitman” due to his ability to hit sixes, became the first cricketer in the world to hit 600 sixes in international cricket.

India wins its opening match at the 9th ICC T20 World Cup 

India defeated Ireland by 8 wickets to open their campaign in the World Cup. The match was played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, United States of America.

Batting first, the Ireland side was bundled out for 96 runs in 16 overs. Hardik Pandya took three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets apiece.

Chasing the modest score of 96, India comfortably achieved the target in 12.2 overs, with Rohit Sharma scoring 52 runs. He had to leave the field retired, hurt. Jasprit Bumrah was declared man of the match for his magnificent bowling of 2 for 6 runs. With this win, Rohit Sharma surpassed many records.

Rohit Sharma scored 52 runs in 37 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. He also became the first cricketer to hit six hundred sixes in international cricket.

Most Win in T20 International by an Indian Captain

Rohit Sharma also broke Mahendra Singh Dhoni's record as the most successful Indian captain in cricket’s shortest format.

Under his captaincy, India has won 42 (including super overs) in T20 format in 55 matches. He broke Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s record of 41 wins in 72 matches.

• Chris Gayle of the West Indies holds the record of 127 sixes. Rohit has hit 100 sixes( 54 in the ODI World Cup, 38 in the T20 World Cup and 8 in the Champions Trophy).
• Rohit Sharma became the third player after Virat Kohli (4038 runs) and Babar Azam (4023) to score more than 4000 runs in T 20 International.
• Rohit Sharma became the third player after Virat Kohli (1142) and Mahela Jayawardene (1016) to score 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup. He has so far scored 1015 runs in 40 T20 World Cup matches.
