Aneesh Dayal Singh appointed Deputy National Security Advisor to the PM

The Government of India has appointed Aneesh Dayal Singh, a 1988 batch experienced IPS officer of the Manipur cadre, as the Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

• As a strategic step to strengthen India’s national security leadership, the government has appointed Aneesh Dayal Singh, a 1988 batch experienced IPS officer of the Manipur cadre, as the Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
• Rajinder Khanna has been appointed as Additional NSA. This is the first time that an appointment has been made to the post of Additional NSA.

Background and Early Career

• Born in 1964 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Singh joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1988 and received training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
• He began his career in Manipur, a state plagued by insurgency challenges, where he gained ground-level experience in counter-insurgency operations at an early stage.
• In the early 2000s, Singh was deputed to the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Leadership of ITBP

• Before taking charge of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in December 2023, Aneesh Dayal Singh had led the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

National Security Advisory Board

• The NSC was formed in 1998 by the government of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee after nuclear tests conducted by India and Pakistan. It is the highest body for national security management in India.
• Before the formation of the NSC, national security-related work was carried out by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. It functions under the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). The NSC is headed by the Prime Minister of India. The NSC headquarters is located in New Delhi.
• The government has reconstituted the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) with the appointment of new members. Former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief Alok Joshi has been appointed as its chairman. In addition, 7 other members are also included.
• The NSAB has contributed to the Nuclear Doctrine (2001) and the National Security Review (2007).
