Government approves phase 3 of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting held on 13th September 2023 has approved the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the next three financial years from 2023-24 to 2025-26.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is administered by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas .
During this period 75 lakh LPG connections will be released to the eligible households. This is expected to increase the beneficiary household to 10.35 crores.
The government will provide a subsidy of Rs 200 per 14.2 kg LPG cylinder .Subsidy will be provided for 12 cylinders in a year.
The government has approved Rs 1650 crore for the third phase of the PMUY.
As per the existing modalities of Ujjawala 2.0, the first refill and stove will also be provided free of cost to Ujjwala beneficiaries.
According to the government of India 55.90% of the population had access to LPG connection which increased to 61.9% in 2016 and to nearly 100% in 2023.
Prime Minister Narednra Modi inaugurated the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ (PMUY) on 1 May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.
Under the PMUY scheme a poor household headed by a woman is provided with a free LPG gas stove and free first LPG Cylinder.
The government provides a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder for 12 cylinders in a financial year.
The target of the PMUY was to release 8 crore LPG connections by March 2020 which was achieved on 7 September 2019.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the PMUY 2.0 at Mahoba ,Madhya Pradesh on 10th August 2021.
The target was to provide an additional 1.6 crore LPG connections with special focus on migrant households.
Like the PMUY 1.0 the connection is provided to an adult woman belonging to a poor household.
The beneficiaries should belong to any of the following categories:
