India is all set to welcome the world for the World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) 2026, scheduled to take place in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, from 15th to 18th September 2026. This marks the first time South Asia has hosted this prestigious global platform, putting India firmly on the map of international environmental governance. The forum will be jointly inaugurated by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, and Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, with senior dignitaries from Finland, the Netherlands, and Gujarat's state government also attending the opening session.
WCEF is a globally recognised platform where countries, businesses, and innovators come together to discuss how the world can move away from a wasteful "take-make-dispose" model toward one that reuses, refurbishes, and recycles resources. This year's edition is jointly organised by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), and the Government of Gujarat along with its Pollution Control Board.
The 2026 edition carries the theme "Circular Economy: Transition for People and Prosperity." This theme reflects how circularity isn't just an environmental concern anymore; it's being positioned as a pathway to jobs, economic growth, and social wellbeing, especially for developing nations.
The four-day event kicks off on 15th September and concludes on 18th September 2026 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
More than 2,000 cross-sectoral participants from over 65 countries will attend WCEF 2026. This includes business leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers, academicians, and changemakers, making it one of the largest gatherings of its kind on circular economy practices.
Alongside the discussions, an international expo will host more than 125 national and international exhibitors. Start-ups and investment-ready innovators will display practical, real-world circular solutions, giving students and industry watchers a glimpse of how sustainability is being turned into workable business models.
On 15th and 16th September, attendees can expect 4 plenary sessions and 16 thematic breakout discussions covering topics like artificial intelligence applications, green jobs, energy production, finance, governance, sustainable products, and youth leadership. Interestingly, the sidelines of the forum will also host an in-person meeting of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes (10 YFP) board, a body India recently began co-chairing. From 17th to 18th September, around 80 accelerator sessions will run online and in person across Gandhinagar and other global locations.
Shri Bhupender Yadav and CM Bhupendrabhai Patel are expected, along with Gujarat's Forest and Environment Minister Shri Arjunbhai Modhwadia, Finland's Ambassador to India Mr. Mikko Kivikoski, and representatives from the Netherlands' Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. The closing ceremony will see participation from Finland's Minister of Climate and Environment, Ms. Sari Multala, and SITRA's Director of International Programmes, Mr. Kristo Lehtonen, who will formally hand over hosting duties to the next country.
