India began its track and field campaign at the Asian Games 2026 with two medals on 24th September, 2026, winning silver in the mixed 4x400m relay and a bronze in the women's 10000m.
The Indian quartet of Machettira Poovamma, Vishal Thennarasu, Vithya Ramraj, and Thekkinalil Manu clocked 3:14.46 in the final to secure silver in the mixed 4x400m relay. Earlier in the day, a different combination featuring Manu, Poovamma along with Jay Kumar and Kiran Pahal had clocked 3:16.23 to book India's spot in the final. For the summit clash, Jay and Kiran made way for Vishal and Vithya. This medal extends India's strong record in this event at the Asian Games, after winning gold at Jakarta 2018 and silver at Hangzhou 2023.
In another highlight of the day, Seema Kumari clocked 32:50.05 to win bronze in the women's 10000m, staying with the lead pack for most of the race before sealing third place near the finish. This result is especially significant as it ended India's 16-year drought for a medal in this event at the Asian Games, with the last Indian women on the podium being Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut, who won gold and silver, respectively, at Guangzhou 2010.
Bahrain topped the mixed relay podium, clocking an Asian Games record time of 3:12.87 to claim gold, while Vietnam settled for bronze with a time of 3:14.54. In the women's 10000m, Bahrain's Winfred Yavi won gold in 32:39.18, followed by Japan's Nozomi Tanaka, who took silver in 32:41.54.
India also saw promising performances elsewhere on the day, with Asha Ilango narrowly missing a bronze in the women's triple jump on countback, and sprinters Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh both advancing to the men's 100m semi-finals.
