Jio Platforms (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), has secured a place in the global top 20. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings for 2025.
It is the only Indian technology innovator company to make it to this prestigious global top-20 list. Jio’s rise of 320 places to reach the 20th spot occurred during a year when global PCT filings saw an increase of less than one percent.
Jio Platforms reported that, as of March 31, 2026, it had filed a total of 6,817 patents. Of these, 2,393 patents were filed in India and 4,424 in foreign jurisdictions.
According to the company, a total of 1,009 patents have been granted worldwide, comprising 538 grants in India and 471 in international markets.
China, the USA, Japan, South Korea, and Germany lead the global Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings based on the country of origin.
China topped the world in 2025 PCT filings with 73,718 applications, while India ranked 12th globally with 3,070 PCT applications.
China held the top spot in the global ranking for 2025 PCT applications, followed by the USA (52,617) and Japan (47,922).
More than 78.2% of all PCT applications filed in 2025 originated from the top five countries.
For the ninth consecutive year, Huawei Technologies (China) remained the world's top Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applicant, filing 7,523 applications in 2025.
It was followed by Samsung Electronics (Republic of Korea) with 4,698 applications and Qualcomm (USA) with 3,227 applications.
With 342 published applications, China's Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology remained the leading applicant among government and public research organizations (PROs) in 2025.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a global agency of the United Nations (UN) that works to protect creative works and intellectual property (IP) rights.
It was established in 1967 to promote creative activity and the protection of intellectual property globally. It administers 26 international treaties and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
WIPO has 193 member states. India joined WIPO in 1975.
