Two small helicopters collided while attempting to land at the Pheriche helipad in Nepal's Mount Everest region on Tuesday, November 3. The tragic accident killed one foreign tourist and injured at least one other person. The collision occurred in the Solukhumbu district, a major hub for mountain climbing and aviation tourism.
One helicopter belonged to Fishtail Air, while the other operated under Air Dynasty. Both aircraft collided as they approached the snowy landing zone simultaneously. Video footage capturing the exact moment of the collision has gone viral across online social media platforms. Aviation authorities have launched an immediate investigation to determine what caused the accident.
Solukhumbu District Police Chief Nabin Raja Budhathoki confirmed the casualty figures following the crash. A foreign passenger traveling aboard the Fishtail Air helicopter died at the scene from collision injuries. The impact also injured Captain Rabindra Prajapati, who commanded the Air Dynasty helicopter.
Emergency rescue teams acted quickly to arrange an emergency airlift for the injured pilot. A Prabhu Helicopter transported Captain Prajapati to Lukla to receive urgent medical treatment. Authorities are gathering more information regarding the full extent of the structural damage to both aircraft.
The accident involved two well-known Nepalese helicopter operators:
Both helicopters collided on approach as they attempted to touch down at the same snowy helipad.
The collision occurred at the high-altitude Pheriche helipad in Ward 4 of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, located in Nepal's Solukhumbu district.
Pheriche sits directly on the popular trekking trail leading toward Mount Everest. Thousands of mountaineers, trekkers, and vacationers visit the remote settlement every year.
Helicopters provide essential transport throughout the Everest region. They ferry visitors, carry cargo supplies to remote villages, and execute medical rescue flights. Navigating high mountain terrain demands precise flight coordination and strict landing protocols from pilots.
Nepal's high Himalayan mountains make road construction nearly impossible in many places. Consequently, local communities rely heavily on helicopter services for daily transport and emergency logistics.
Tour agencies use helicopters to shorten travel times for international visitors. Rescue teams also count on these aircraft to evacuate injured climbers from high-altitude camps when ground transport is unavailable. The Pheriche crash highlights the extreme flying conditions and safety requirements that mountain aviation crews face daily.
Civil aviation officials and local police have begun a formal inquiry into the Pheriche crash. Investigators will review landing protocols, pilot communications, wind conditions, and visual footage to understand how the two rotors made contact.
While officials gather technical evidence, police have confirmed one death and one injury. Further details will emerge as aviation investigators publish their findings.
