Bhutan raised 108 Stupas in a single day in Gelephu Mindfulness City on 1st November, 2026. The King of Bhutan dedicated Stupa No. 76 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a gesture that shows the warm ties between India and Bhutan.
The project was conceived by the King of Bhutan, who also guided its implementation. Thousands of volunteers built all 108 Stupas in one day.
The project aims to present Gelephu Mindfulness City as a major centre of Vajrayana Buddhism and to reflect the values and culture of the Bhutanese people.
The King of Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck dedicated it to PM Modi for his commitment and steady support to Gelephu Mindfulness City. The King, Bhutan’s Prime Minister, and Rijiju offered prayers there. Rijiju thanked the King on behalf of PM Modi.
Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, represented the Government of India. The ceremony for raising and consecrating the Stupas was held on 1 November 2026 and led by the King of Bhutan.
The Government of India described his presence as a sign of shared spiritual and cultural ties and of the close friendship between the people of both countries.
During his visit from 31 October to 2 November 2026, Rijiju had an audience with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and met Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay. Both sides welcomed the growing cooperation in development, trade, energy, investment, connectivity and cultural links. Rijiju also reaffirmed India’s support for Gelephu Mindfulness City and its role in developing neighbouring areas in India.
