Every year September 8 is observed as the International Literacy Day . According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) “the International literacy day is observed to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.”
According to UNESCO in 2020 at least 763 million young people and adults in the world lack basic literacy skills. Literacy skill means a person's ability to read or write in a language .
At the 14th session of the UNESCO’s General Conference held in 1966 , a resolution was passed to observe 8 September as International Literacy Day.
The first International Literacy Day was celebrated in 1967.
The theme of the International Literacy day 2023 is : Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’.
UNESCO will organise an International event on 8 September in Paris, France on the occasion of the International Literacy Day.
