Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah led the national observance of Police Commemoration Day at the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, on October 21, 2026. The solemn ceremony honored law enforcement personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty to protect India's sovereignty, internal security, and public safety.
As part of the national tribute, the Home Minister flagged off a major anti-drug motorcycle rally featuring 90 police riders drawn from state police forces, Union Territories, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and specialized central agencies.
India observes Police Commemoration Day every year on October 21 to commemorate ten heroic police officers killed during an ambush by Chinese forces in 1959.
On October 21, 1959, heavily armed Chinese troops ambushed an Indian police patrol unit at Hot Springs in Ladakh. Ten brave policemen died defending the border. Their supreme sacrifice established a lasting legacy of selfless service, prompting police forces nationwide to designate October 21 as an annual day of remembrance.
The main ceremony in New Delhi featured a ceremonial parade combining contingents from the Delhi Police and various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
Senior officials attending the ceremony included the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, heads of central police organizations, retired Directors General of Police, and former police officers serving as Members of Parliament.
Dignitaries laid wreaths at the central altar, paying respects to the fallen heroes. Amit Shah addressed the gathering, praising the constant vigilance of security forces. He concluded the tribute by laying a floral wreath at the cenotaph dedicated to the martyrs of the 1959 Hot Springs clash.
Doordarshan broadcasted the event live nationwide, while All India Radio (AIR) and official police web portals provided live streaming coverage.
To combine national remembrance with social action, Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the 'Fight Against Drugs' national motorcycle rally from the memorial grounds.
The rally features 90 skilled riders representing a wide network of law enforcement bodies across India:
The riders will navigate multi-state routes before arriving at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, to participate in the prestigious Ekta Parade on October 31, 2026.
Dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Police Commemoration Day in 2018, the National Police Memorial in Chanakyapuri honors over 35,000 police martyrs who died serving independent India.
