Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Rob Jetten on assuming the post of Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Jetten was formally sworn in on 23 February, 2026 by King Willem-Alexander at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague.
- Rob Jetten has become the youngest and first openly gay Prime Minister of the Netherlands after the swearing-in of his minority government. He is engaged to his partner Nicholas Keenan, who is a two-time Olympian from Argentina and a field hockey star.
- 38-year-old Jetten claimed victory in the October elections, in which his Democrats 66 party (D66) narrowly defeated anti-Islam populist Geert Wilders in a closely contested election.
- To form a new coalition, D66 joined hands with centre-right Christian Democrats and right-wing VVD, which had only 66 seats out of 150 in the lower house.
- The Netherlands is usually led by a majority coalition, but a highly fragmented political environment made it very difficult to form one. Former Prime Minister Dick Schoof’s government fell after only 11 months of its term.
- Jetten formed a centre-right minority government along with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA).
- Jetten has become Prime Minister replacing Dick Schoof, who saw one of the shortest-lived governments in Dutch history. D66 will give seven ministers, VVD six, and CDA five ministers, each of whom will have three state secretaries — junior members of the cabinet.
