Various exams ask questions regarding days and their themes. At the global level, the United Nations and its various agencies designate a year, specific days, and weeks to mark particular events or topics and promote, through awareness and action, the objectives of the United Nations and its various organisations.

The Government of India or its Ministries also designate a year, specific days, and weeks with a particular theme.

2025 as a Year 

The United Nations has designated 2025 as the Year as follows;

International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

  • 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the development of the methods of quantum mechanics that have led to its prominence in both science and technology today. 

International Year of Peace and Trust

  • Before 2025, the  United Nations observed 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.

International Year of Glaciers

  • The United Nations has also decided to observe the 21st of March every year as the World Day for Glaciers.
  • The first World Day for Glaciers will be observed on 21st March 2025.

International Years of Cooperatives 

  • Theme: "Cooperatives Build a Better World" 
  • The year-long celebration of International Day of Cooperatives started in India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi started it on 25 November 2024 in New Delhi at the ICA Global Cooperative Conference 2024.

Union Ministry of Defence 

  • The Union Ministry of Defence has decided to celebrate 2025 as the “Year of Reform”

The following are the important weeks/days in March 2025.

National Safety Week 

4-10 March 

  • The National Safety Week is observed from 4- 10 March
  • The first day or 4th March is observed as National Safety Day.
  • First -1971 
  • 2025 Theme of National Safety Week /National Safety Day - Safety & Well-being Crucial for Viksit Bharat"
  • Organised by the National Safety Council (NSC) of India to promote a culture of safety consciousness, commitment, and proactive measures to prevent accidents and mishaps. 

1st March  

Zero Discrimination Day 

  • Launched by UNAIDS to ensure that all people living with and affected by HIV are treated with dignity and respect. 
  • The human immunodeficiency (HIV) virus causes AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) disease.
  • First - 2014 
  • 2025 Theme - We Stand Together

3rd March 

World Wildlife Day 

  • The Conference of the Parties to CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) in a meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 2013, decided to observe 3rd March as World Wildlife Day.
  • Significance of 3rd March - On this day in 1973, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was adopted.
  • The United Nations General Assembly endorsed the CITES resolution by passing a resolution in December 2013. 
  • First - 3 March 2014
  • 2025 Theme - Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet.

4th March 

National Safety Day 

  • 2025 Theme:  Safety & Well-being Crucial for Viksit Bharat.

6th March 

Lineman Diwas 

  • It was established by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Power.
  • First - 6 March 2021. 
  • Theme 2025- Seva, Suraksha, Swabhiman.

7th MARCH

Jan Aushadhi Diwas

  • The day is celebrated to raise awareness about the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) and promote the use of generic medicines. 
  • Week-long events are organised nationwide from March 1st to 7th to support this initiative.
  • Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was launched in November 2008.
  • It aims to provide quality medicines at affordable prices through dedicated outlets called Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK).

8th March 

International Women Day 

  • The United Nations marked International Women's Day in 1975.
  • Theme 2025- For All  Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”

10th March 

CISF Raising Day 

  • Founded on 10 March 1969 by the government of India under the Central Industrial Security Force Act, 1968.
  • 56th CISF Day 2025 celebrated at Thakkolam, Tamil Nadu, 
  • Motto of CISF: Protection and Security 
  • Come under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs

14th March 

International Day of Action for Rivers 

  • A group of non-governmental organisations worldwide met in March 1997 in Curitiba, Brazil, under the banner of the International Meeting of People Affected by Dams.
  • They decided to observe 14 March as the International Day of Action for Rivers.
  • Theme 2025 - Our Rivers Our Future

15th March 

World Consumer Rights Day 

  • On this day in 1962, former US President John F Kennedy recognised consumer rights in an address to the US Congress (Parliament).
  • First time in the US in 1983.
  • Later on, it was gradually celebrated all over the world.
  • Theme 2025- A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles.

16th March 

National Immunisation Day (National Vaccination Day)

  • Started in 1995 with the launch of the nationwide pulse polio immunisation programme.
  • Theme 2025- Vaccines Work for All

18th March 

Ordnance Factory Day 

  • It is observed to acknowledge the contribution made by the Ordnance companies in India’s defence by making arms and munitions for the armed forces.
  • On this day in 1802, the oldest Ordnance factory in India started production.
  • The East India Company established the oldest ordnance factory, ‘Gun Carriage Agency’ in Cassipore, Kolkata.
  • The factory is now known as the Gun and Shell Factory.

20th March 

International Happiness Day 

  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 12 July 2012 to celebrate 20th March as the International Day of Happiness.
  • First - 2013
  • Theme 2025- Caring and Sharing

World Sparrow Day 

  • It was started by the Nashik, Maharashtra-based NGO, Nature Forever Society, in 2010.
  • The day is observed to protect and raise awareness about the declining population of the Sparrow (Passer domesticus).
  • Sparrow is also known as Goriya, Kuruvi in Tamil.
  • In 2012, the Sparrow was declared the state bird of Delhi.

21st March

World Day for Glaciers 

  • The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on 14 December 2022 to observe 21 March as World Day of Glaciers.
  • First - 21 March 2025
  • Theme 2025 - Glacier Preservation 

International Day of Forest 

  • The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2012 to observe 21st March as the International Day of Forestry.
  • First -2013
  • Theme 2025 -Forests and Food.

 

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

  • The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on 26 October 1966, declaring 21 March the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
  • First - 1967
  • Theme 2025-  60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

World Poetry Day 

  • UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) adopted a resolution at its 30th General Congress in Paris, France, in 1990 to observe 21st March as World Poetry Day.
  • First- 2000.
  • Theme 2025- Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion. 

International Nowruz Day 

  • Nowruz, also spelled Novruz, Navruz, Nooruz, Nevruz, or Nauryz in Persian, means new day. It is the first day of the month of Farvardīn on the Iranian calendar.
  • The United Nations General Assembly has declared March 21 as International Nowruz Day.
  • The festival is celebrated on the vernal equinox, 20 or 21 March. This year, it is being celebrated on 20 March 2025.

World Down Syndrome Day 

  • In December 2011, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day.
  • First -2012
  • A normal human being has 21 pairs of chromosomes. A person having an extra chromosome suffers from Down syndrome.
  • Theme 2025- Improve Our Support Systems

World Puppetry Day 

  • The International Puppetry Association, or Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA), designated 21 March as World Puppetry Day.
  • First - 2003

22nd March 

World Water Day

  • On 22  December 1992, the General Assembly declared 22 March as World Water Day.
  • First- 1999
  • Theme 2025: Glacier Preservation 

23rd March 

World Meteorological Day 

  • World Meteorological Day is observed to mark the foundation of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) on 23 March 1950.
  • WMO is a specialised agency of the United Nations.
  • First - 1961 
  • Theme 2025 -Closing the early warning gap together.

Shaheed Diwas, or Martyr’s Day

  • This day commemorates the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.
  • On this day in 1931, Bhagat Singh, along with fellow revolutionaries Sukhdev Thapar and S Rajguru, were hanged to death in Lahore Central Jail for murdering British police officer John Saunders. 

24th March 

World Tuberculosis Day

  • On this day in 1882, a German scientist, Dr. Robert Koch, discovered the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, which causes Tuberculosis.
  • First - 24 March 1982.
  • Theme 2025: Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.

27th March 

World Theater Day 

  • It was started by the International Theatre Institute in 1962.
  • 27 March was chosen because on this day in 1962, the ‘Theatre of Nations’ session opened in Paris, France.
  • Permanent Theme- Theatre and a Culture of Peace.

28th March  

Universal Acceptance Day 

  • The day promotes a multilingual and inclusive internet where all valid domain names and email addresses work seamlessly.
  • The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) established Universal Acceptance Day with the support of the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG).
  • First- 28 March 2023.
  • Theme 2025: Connecting the Unconnected - Building a Multilingual Internet for Viksit Bharat. (India only)

28th March 

International Day of Zero Waste

  • On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to observe  30 March as International Day of Zero Waste.
  • It is observed to draw attention to the mounting problem of waste worldwide.
  • Theme 2025 -  Towards zero waste in fashion and textiles.
