The Army Medical Corps (AMC) marked its 260th Raising Day on April 3, 2024, commemorating a significant milestone in its history. The Army Medical Corps was established in the year 1764. The Army Medical Corps has rendered selfless service to the nation through progress, development, dedication and sacrifice over the centuries, both in times of war and peace.

Motto of the Army Medical Corps:

  • For centuries, the Corps has lived up to its motto 'Sarve Santu Niramaya' which means 'Let all be free from disease'.
  • On this occasion, Army Chief General Manoj Pande and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary participated in a programme organized in New Delhi.
  • This function was organized to mark the Foundation Day. It was also organized to recognize the achievements and celebrate the esprit-d-core of AMC.
  • A video showcasing Armed Forces Medical Services' achievements was screened during the program. In which more than 700 ex-servicemen and dignitaries of AFMS and Civil and Army participated.

Contribution of Army Medical Corps:

  • AMC Foundation Day celebrates the contribution of thousands of officers, JCOs and other ranks of the Army Medical Corps.
  • It has been successful in impacting the lives of armed forces personnel, families and ex-servicemen. As part of United Nations Peace Corps missions and HADR activities on foreign soil, the Corps has excelled in every area of medical care.
  • It has worked to maximize the best state-of-the-art medical care during wartime. This AMC has gone beyond the call of duty and set a high standard in the field of professionalism, courage and compassion in its endeavor to enhance peacetime medical care.
  • AMC has been continuously moving towards the ultimate goal of 'Healthy India, Developed India'.

About Army Medical Corps (AMC) Raising Day:

  • The Indian Army Medical Corps came into existence on 3 April 1943 by the amalgamation of the Indian Medical Service, the Indian Medical Department and the Indian Hospital Corps.
  • AMC pioneers many innovations in military medicine. These included the use of anesthesia during surgery, the development of field hospitals, and the introduction of sanitation and hygiene practices in military camps. These innovations have been critical in reducing mortality among soldiers during combat.
  • Initially the Corps was tasked with providing medical support to the British Army which included treating battlefield injuries and diseases.
  • AMC played a vital role in improving the health and welfare of soldiers and its legacy continues today.
  • One of the most important contributions of the AMC was the establishment of the Army Medical School in 1860. The school trained medical officers for military service and through research the Army Medical School is presently known as the Army Medical Services Training Centre.
  • The Bengal Presidency Medical Service, which was the first military service of the three Presidencies in India. It was established on 1 January 1764.
