Union Minister for Road and Transport Highways Nitin Gadkari will launch the much-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, 2023.Union Minister for Road and Transport Highways Nitin Gadkari will launch the much-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, 2023.
The program is a significant step in the Government's commitment to improve road safety by raising safety standards for motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes in India.
With this, India will become the 5th country in the world to implement the Car Crash Safety Program. After the implementation of Bharat NCAP, the safety of Made in India cars can be checked and this will greatly benefit the customers.
The objective of Bharat NCAP is to provide car customers with a tool to make a comparative assessment of crash safety of motor vehicles available in the market.
Under this program, car manufacturers can voluntarily offer their cars tested in accordance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.
Based on the car's performance in these tests, the car will be awarded star ratings for adult occupant and child occupant. Potential car customers can refer to these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and make their buying decision accordingly.
It is expected that this will increase the demand for safer cars, thereby encouraging car manufacturers to meet the needs of the customers.
With higher safety standards, Indian cars will be able to compete better in the global market, thereby increasing the export potential of car manufacturers in India.
This program is expected to develop the safety sensitive car market in India.
Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP) is the main agency for setting safety standards for cars globally.
