Gwalior-Chambal Region Gets Boost With Gauge-Converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur Rail Section
Updated: 19 Aug 2026
2 Min Read

Rail connectivity in the Gwalior-Chambal region received a major boost on 18th August, 2026, with the inauguration of the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh, along with the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service up to Birpur. The section was virtually inaugurated by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav.
The newly opened 56-km Kailaras-Birpur section is expected to improve direct rail connectivity between Birpur, Vijaypur, Sabalgarh, and Gwalior. Vaishnaw noted that this project would benefit residents across more than 100 villages spanning Bamor, Joura, Kailaras, and Sabalgarh tehsils of Morena district, as well as Birpur, Sheopur, and Karahal tehsils of Sheopur district, improving access to Gwalior for education, healthcare, and employment.
This rail line has been developed in phases over the past few years.
Vaishnaw highlighted a significant rise in the state's railway budget, from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27, marking nearly a 24-fold increase. Railway projects worth around ₹1.55 lakh crore are currently underway in Madhya Pradesh, with 80 stations being redeveloped and multiple Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains connecting the state.
Scindia described the Birpur extension as a historic development for the Gwalior-Chambal region, calling it a "new beginning." He noted that the railway line, once limited to Bamore, Sumaoli, Joura, and Kailaras, now reaches Birpur and will eventually extend to Sheopur and Kota, benefiting areas like Rampahadi and Vijaypur along the way.
CM Mohan Yadav said the expanded railway network would strengthen ties between the Gwalior-Chambal region and Malwa, supporting emerging industries such as battery energy storage, footwear, hydrogen manufacturing, and tourism. He added that ongoing doubling, tripling, and quadrupling of railway lines across the state would further reinforce this connectivity.
