NCC Cadet successfully climbs Mount Everest for the third time

A National Cadet Corps (NCC) contingent successfully scaled Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain peak, on 18 May 2025. This was the third successful expedition of the NCC to Mount Everest after 2013 and 2016. 

The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh flagged off the NCC expedition on 3rd April 2025.

About the NCC Contingent

The NCC contingent comprised 10 NCC cadets selected from all over India, 5 boys and girls each. They were trained at the Army Mountaineering Institute, Siachen Base Camp. 

The 10 cadets were accompanied by four Officers, two Junior Commissioned Officers, One Girl Cadet Instructor and 10 Non-Commissioned Officers.

The average age of the NCC contingent was 19, and the youngest member was 16.

About Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain peak along the boundary of Nepal and Tibet.

It is located in the Great Himalayas region of the Himalayas. 

In Nepal, Mount Everest is called Sagarmatha, and in Tibet it is known as Chomolungma. 

The mountain peak was named Peak XV and was renamed Mount Everest in 1865 in honour of Sir George Everest.

In 1852, the Surveyor of India, under the leadership of Sir George Everest, accurately measured the height of the  peak

Height - Around  8,848.86 metres or 29,031.69 feet.

First Person - New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary, on 29 May 1953. Nepali-Indian Sherpa Tenzing Norgay accompanied him.

First woman in the world-  Junko Tabei of Japan, on 16 May 1975.

First Indian woman -  Bachendri Pal on 23 May 1984.

First woman to climb Mount Everest twice - Santosh Yadav of India in 1992 and 1993.

First woman amputee in the world-- Arunima Sinha  of India in 2013 

Youngest girl in the world to climb Mount Everest  -Malvanath Poorna of India in 2014. She was 13 years and 11 months old.

Oldest woman in the world to climb Mount Everest - Tamae Watanabe of Japan at the age of 73 years.

Oldest Indian woman - Jyoti Ratre at the age of 55 years in May 2024.

National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) was raised on 15 July 1948 under the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948.

It is a voluntary organisation that recruits cadets from schools, colleges and universities.

It is a Tri-Service organisation —the Army, Navy, and Air Force—that grooms the country's youth into patriotic and disciplined citizens.
