Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar died on 8 October 2026 in Goa. He was 75. Over a career of more than four decades, he won three National Film Awards and worked in Hindi, Marathi and Tamil cinema.
Patekar complained of severe chest pain early on Thursday. His son, Malhar Patekar, said a medical team went to the actor's flat in Goa and found him unresponsive. He was taken to Manipal Hospital, where doctors tried to revive him for about 45 minutes. He was declared dead at 5:20 am. As per ANI, the cause was cardiac arrest.
He wasn't a registered patient there, so the hospital informed the police. A post-mortem is being done at Goa Medical College.
As per his wishes, he will be cremated at his farm in Pune. The Maharashtra government has announced a state funeral with full honours. His last public appearance was on 4 October at the Samraat Club International ceremony in Dona Paula, Goa.
Nana Patekar was born as Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra. He studied at Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, before moving into theatre and films. He made his Hindi film debut with Gaman (1978). Ankush (1986) gave his career real momentum. Then came Parinda (1989), where he played the gangster Anna and won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In Natsamrat (2016), he played an ageing theatre actor and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Marathi). In Tamil cinema, he played the political villain Harinath Desai in Rajinikanth's Kaala (2018).
He made his directorial debut with Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991). In 2015, he co-founded the Naam Foundation with Makarand Anaspure to help drought-hit farmers in Maharashtra. He also held the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. His recent films include Vanvaas (2024), Housefull 5 (2025), O' Romeo and Subedaar (2026).
