The Indian Army has launched the Bharat Rice for Troops programme and signed a five-year MoU with the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The launch took place in New Delhi on October 12, 2026, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi present.
The aim is to improve the quality of rations, based on regular feedback from troops. The rice will reach Army Supply Depots directly, including those in Ladakh and the North East, so depots no longer have to collect it from local FCI facilities.
Under the MoU, the Army can use FCI’s warehouses, workers, and material-handling equipment during operational contingencies. It stays valid for five years and can be extended by mutual consent. Army Supply and Transport units will coordinate with FCI’s regional and divisional offices.
The MoU was shaped by lessons from Operation Sindoor, which showed that future conflicts may begin at short notice and last long. Its main objectives are:
The Bharat Rice programme and the FCI MoU together make the Army’s supply system stronger and more reliable. The Army gains the following benefits.
Define Minsiter Rajnath Singh said logistics is itself combat power, as wars are not won on the front line alone. Better food supports soldiers’ health, morale and stamina in harsh terrain. The scheme also reflects the dual-use approach, where civil infrastructure serves military needs, and the spirit of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”
