Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to host Khelo India Winter Games 2025

The Union Territory of Ladakh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will jointly host the Khelo India Winter Games 2025. An announcement was made to this effect on 11 December 2024 by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The 2024 edition of the Khelo India Winter Games was also co-hosted by Ladkah and Jammu and Kashmir.
Before 2024, the Khelo India Winter Games was only held at Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir.
The 2025 Khelo India Winter Games will be important for athletes as it will also be a selection event for the forthcoming Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy in February 2026.
Bihar will host the Khelo India Youth & Para Games in April 2025.
Khelo India Winter Games is different from the National Winter Games. The Indian Olympic Association organises the National Games, and Uttarakhand will host the next National Winter Games.

Ladakh to host Ice events and Gulmarg Snow events
The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 will be held in two phases, and a total of six events will take place.
In the first phase of the Winter Games, Leh in Ladakh will hold ice events- ice hockey and ice skiing -from 23-27 January 2025.
In the second phase of the Games, Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir will host snow events -alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering and snowboarding from 22-25 February 2024.
About Khelo India Winter Games
The first Khelo India Winter Games was organised by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2000 in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir. Around 1000 athletes participated in the inaugural edition of the Games.
The Khelo India Winter Games is held annually, and Jammu and Kashmir has topped the medals tally in the first three editions.
In the 2024 edition of the Games, Army topped the medals tally, with Karnataka being the runner-up.
About Khelo India Games
The Khelo India Games was proposed by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in 2017 to provide a platform for young sportspersons in India and build a dedicated sports infrastructure in the country.
The ministry, in association with the Indian Olympic Association, organises the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) and the Khelo India Winter Games under the Khelo India initiatives.
The athletes represent their states/Union territories or the Universities in the Khelo India University Games.
- Under the Khelo India initiatives, the first Games to be organised was the Khelo India School Games in 2018 in New Delhi.
- In 2019, it was renamed Khelo India Youth Games and held in Pune, Maharashtra.
- The first Khelo India University Games was hosted by the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Odisha in 2020.
- The first edition of the Khelo India Winter Games was held in 2020 in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir.
