India, Australia and Canada announced a new trilateral technology and innovation framework – the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership.
- India, Australia and Canada announced a new trilateral technology and innovation framework – the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. This agreement was made during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.
- Under the agreement, the three countries will increase cooperation on essential and emerging technologies, which will complement existing bilateral initiatives. This partnership will leverage each country’s natural strengths, with special focus on green energy innovation and strong supply chains, especially in critical minerals.
Purpose of ACITI
- The aim of ACITI is to advance shared goals on the path to net-zero emissions, support diversification of global supply chains, and promote a secure, sustainable and resilient technological ecosystem.
- The three sides will also explore ways to accelerate the development and large-scale adoption of artificial intelligence to improve the lives of their citizens.
- To take this initiative forward, officials from the three countries will meet in the first quarter of 2026.
- This initiative will leverage the natural strengths of all three countries, with emphasis on building strong supply chains, including green energy innovation and critical minerals.
- According to a joint statement issued by the three parties, this will further deepen their ambitions and strategic collaboration towards net-zero and advance further diversification of supply chains towards a secure, sustainable and resilient future.
Prime Minister participated in the IBSA leaders’ meeting in Johannesburg
- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) leaders’ meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 23 November 2025. The meeting was hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva participated in it.
- The Prime Minister termed this meeting timely, saying that it was held alongside the first G20 Summit on African soil and marked the conclusion of four consecutive G20 presidencies among Global South countries, the last three of which were held by IBSA member nations.
IBSA
- It is a unique forum that brings together India, Brazil and South Africa, three major democracies and major economies from three different continents, which are facing similar challenges.
- This group was formalized and named the IBSA Dialogue Forum when the foreign ministers of the three countries met in Brasilia on 6 June 2003 and issued the Brasilia Declaration.
- To eradicate poverty and hunger, the IBSA Facility (IBSA Fund) was jointly launched by India, Brazil and South Africa in March 2004 and became operational in 2006.
- The IBSAMAR military exercise, which brings together the navies of all three countries, was held in October 2022 after a gap of more than four years. The latest meeting took place in September 2022 when senior ministers of the three countries met in New York.
- However, there has been no meeting of their heads of state or government since 2011.
