US-India Secure Undersea Cable Partnership in TRUST Initiative

India and the United States have joined hands to strengthen the security and resilience of undersea cable networks that power global digital connectivity. This new cooperation is aimed at protecting critical infrastructure and expanding secure internet links across the Indo-Pacific region.
Government and industry experts from both nations recently held an Undersea Cables Workshop to discuss ways to protect subsea communication systems. These cables are extremely important since they carry the vast majority of global digital traffic, supporting cloud computing, banking systems, telecom services, and AI technologies. Through this partnership, India and the US aim to make these vital networks more secure and dependable.
Both countries plan to work with trusted technology providers to build stronger and safer subsea cable systems. The goal is to reduce risks such as cyberattacks, sabotage, and overdependence on limited suppliers or routes. To achieve this, they intend to support multiple cable landing stations and diverse routes, helping minimise disruption if any single cable or route faces an issue.
With its expanding digital economy, growing need for cloud and AI infrastructure, and strong geographic location linking key global markets, India is well placed to emerge as a major centre for undersea cable networks. This cooperation builds upon earlier US-India efforts in cable and satellite technology.
This cable initiative falls under the wider US-India TRUST framework, short for Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technologies. The framework promotes joint work in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, biotechnology, and space. India was among the earliest nations to join related efforts such as the Pax Silica initiative, reflecting strong technological trust between the two countries.
The TRUST initiative also supports building large-scale AI infrastructure in India, covering areas such as funding, power supply, and connectivity. It further focuses on developing next-generation data centres, improving access to computing resources, and encouraging AI innovation, while ensuring proper safeguards for sensitive technologies.
