US President Donald Trump has announced a new agreement with Denmark and Greenland. He made the announcement on 18th September, 2026 and named it the "Infinite Life" agreement. Trump says the pact gives the US a lasting role in Greenland's security, but the exact terms and legal scope have not yet been made public.
Trump said the US worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to reach this pact. He claimed it gives Washington "permanent control" over security and security-related needs on the Arctic island. According to him, the US can now take any step it considers necessary to secure and defend both Greenland and the United States.
Trump called the deal "Infinite Life" because, in his words, it has no end date. He described it as a good outcome for the US, Denmark, Greenland and their allies.
According to Trump, the agreement includes:
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. It lies between North America and Europe and close to important Arctic and North Atlantic routes, which makes it very important for Arctic security. Trump has earlier argued that the island should come under US control, pointing to the growing presence of Russia and China in the region.
The announcement also comes as the EU, Denmark and Greenland deepen their ties. On 7 September, the three signed a joint declaration to strengthen their political and economic partnership. The European Commission has also announced a €200 million Global Gateway Partnership Package for Greenland for 2026 and 2027, covering digital connectivity, sustainable energy, critical raw materials, education and fisheries.
Trump said the US will immediately begin developing a large military presence in a suitable part of Greenland. He added that the US will work with the people of Greenland on its development and construction. He also said the US will be "very protective" of the island.
