New Zealand's Parliament has passed the legislation needed to bring the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) into force. The bill cleared its final vote on 16 September 2026 with strong cross-party support, 93 votes in favour against 29, moving the landmark trade pact closer to actually taking effect later this year.
This is arguably the headline win for Indian exporters. Every single Indian export entering New Zealand will now be free of duty, giving a real boost to labour-heavy sectors such as textiles, leather, and engineering goods. On top of that, India also gets cheaper access to raw materials it needs, like wooden logs, coking coal, and metal scrap, which should help bring down manufacturing costs at home.
On the flip side, India has agreed to ease tariffs on roughly 95% of New Zealand's exports by value, though not all at once. Around 30% of these tariff lines see immediate elimination, while the rest phase out gradually over three to ten years, giving Indian industries time to adjust.
Beyond the economics, this FTA strengthens India's Indo-Pacific partnerships at a time when the region is seeing shifting power dynamics. For New Zealand, India offers a way to diversify trade away from overreliance on any single partner,ย while tapping into a fast-growing consumer base. Parliament's approval is a big legislative milestone, though the agreement still needs both countries to complete ratification before it formally kicks in
