Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon oversaw the signing of five Memorandums of Understanding between India and New Zealand in Auckland on the occasion of Modi's historic three-day visit from 8th July to 10th July 2026, the first by an Indian PM to New Zealand in four decades. The pacts cover defence, animal husbandry and dairy, tourism, sports, and disaster management and came right after delegation-level talks between the two leaders.

Why Does the India-New Zealand Strategic Partnership Matter?

Beyond the MoUs, both sides announced a new strategic partnership, giving a broader framework to their ties. Modi also praised the recently concluded India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, calling it proof of both countries' shared urgency to deepen economic links. Luxon, for his part, said the relationship "extends beyond the FTA," pointing to trade, security, and people-to-people exchanges as equally important pillars.

Modi's visit was the third stop after Australia and Indonesia and also included a Guard of Honor at Government House and an address to the Indian diaspora, with Auckland's Sky Tower lit up in tricolor to mark the occasion.
