Indian men’s hockey team win gold at 19th Asian Games Sport 5 min read

The Indian men’s hockey team led by Harmanpreet Singh won gold by defeating Japan 5-1 in the final of the 19th Asian Games at Hangzhou, China on 6 October 2023.

On day 13th of the 19th Asian games India won 9 medals with 1 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze.  As on 6 October 2023, India have won 95 medals at the Asian Games 2023, 22 gold, 34 silver and 39 bronze.

The 19th edition of the Asian Games officially began on September 23, 2023, and will conclude on October 8, 2023.

4th gold medal in men’s Hockey for India in the Asian Games

This was the fourth gold medal in men’s hockey for India at the Asian games . They have won gold in the 1966 (Bangkok),1998 (Bangkok),2014 (Incheon) and 2023 (Hangzhou) Asian Games.

India has become the joint second most successful men’s hockey team in the Asian games along with South Korea. Pakistan is the most successful men’s hockey team in the Asian Games with 9 gold medals. 

The Indian men's hockey team coached by Craig Fulton also qualified for the 2024 Paris summer Olympics games. The Indian men’s hockey team remained undefeated in the Hangzhou Asian games.

Medal Winners for India on Day 13 of the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games 

Gold Medal Winners 

  • The men's Hockey team defeated Japan in the final 5-1.

Silver Medal Winners 

  • Indian men’s bridge team of Jaggy Shivdasani, Sandeep Thakral, Rajeshwar Tiwari, Sumit Mukherjee, Raju Tolani and Ajay Khare  lost to Hong Kong China in the final to settle for the silver medal.
  • India’s men's archery team of Atanu Das, Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tushar Shelke lost to South Korea in the recurve team event  in the final  to settle for the silver medal.

Bronze medal Winners 

  • Commonwealth Games bronze medallist  woman wrestler Kiran Bishnoi,defeated Mongolia's Ariunjargal Ganbat in the women's freestyle 76kg  to win a bronze medal.
  • Aman Sehrawat beat China's Liu Minghu in the men's wrestling freestyle 57kg to win the bronze medal.
  • Sonam Malik won a bronze medal in the 63kg freestyle wrestling event by defeating  Jia Long of China.
  • The India women’s team clinched its first-ever bronze in sepaktakraw after losing against Thailand in the regu semifinal
  • Veteran Badminton player HS Prannoy lost to world No. 8 Li Shifeng of China in the singles semi-final . However he won the bronze medal as a losing semifinalist. Syed Modi is only the other male badminton player to win a men’s singles medal in the  Asian Games . He also won a bronze medal in the 1982 Asian Games.
  • Women’s archery team of Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur and Simranjeet Kaur defeated the Vietnamese team in the recurve event to win the bronze medal.
