According to the latest Ookla Speedtest Global Index 2023 report, India has jumped 72 places, from 119th place to 47th position in the Speedtest Global Index. According to Ookla, the impressive performance of India in the mobile internet speed ranking is due to the recent launch of 5G services within the country.
India was ranked higher than its neighbouring countries like Pakistan(127th), Sri Lanka(126th), and Bangladesh(118th). India is also ahead of several G20 nations, including Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th place), and South Africa (48th place).
According to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index 2023 at the end of August 2023, the country having the fastest mobile internet speed in descending orders were;
India was ranked at 47th place, and the slowest mobile internet was found in Cuba. Cuba was ranked at 145th place.
The 5th generation (5G) mobile service was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1, 2022 at the Indian Mobile Congress held in New Delhi. The first company to launch the 5G service was Jio Telecom, followed by Airtel. At present, only Jio and Airtel are providing 5G services in the country.
According to Ookla, India’s speed performance has seen a 3.59 times increase since the introduction of 5G. The median download speeds improved from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022 to 50.21 Mbps in August 2023. This improvement has led to India’s rise in the Speedtest Global Index, moving up 72 places, from 119th place to the 47th position.
