India finishes the 19th Asian Games with a record 107 Medals Sport 7 min read

The Indian contingent finished their campaign at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, with a record 107 medals - 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze. The 106th medal was won by the men’s chess team, while the 107th medal was won by the women’s chess team of Koneru Humpy, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Vantika Agrawal, Savitha Shri B,Harika Dronavalli . 

The first medal in the Hangzhou Games came to India courtesy- the Men's 10m Air Rifle shooting team of Divyansh Panwar, Rudrankksh Patil and Aishwary Pratap. They won a gold medal.

India broke the record of 70 medals -16 gold, 23 silver and 31 bronze achieved at the 2018 Jakarta (Indonesia) Asian Games

The 19th Asian Games was originally scheduled to be held in 2022, but due to COVID, it was postponed and was held from September 23 to October 8, 2023. The 20th Asian Games will be held in Aichi, Japan in 2026.

Record set by India at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games

  • India, for the first time, won more than 100 medals in a single edition of the Asian Games. Only China, Japan and South Korea have achieved this feat. The 100th medal was a gold, which was won by the women’s kabaddi team.
  • Maximum 7 gold medals for India came in shooting .
  • The second-highest gold medals came in athletics, where India won 6 gold.
  • The men's and women's archery compound teams won all 5 gold medals in the category.
  • India also earned their first Asian Games badminton gold medal. The world No. 3 ranked duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won a gold in the men’s double event.
  • India won both gold in men's and women's javelin events. Neeraj Chopra won the men’s, while Annu Rani won it in the women's event.
  • India won both gold in men's and women's cricket. 

Oldest and youngest Indian to win a medal at the Asian Games 

Sanjana Bathula became the youngest Indian to win a medal at the Asian Games. She won the bronze medal in the women's speed skating 3000m relay event at the age of 15 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Jaggy Shivdasani became the oldest Indian to win an Asian Games medal. He was part of the men’s bridge team that won a silver medal at the 19th Asian Games. He was 65 years, 7 months and 20 days old. 

Record set by Indians at the Hangzhou Asian Games

Athletics 

  • Vithya Ramraj equalled the national record in women's 400m hurdles (55.42s) set by P.T Usha in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. She won a bronze medal.
  • Avinash Sable set the Asian Games record in men's 3000m steeplechase (8:19:53). He won the gold medal.

Shooting 

  • Sift Kaur Samra set a world record in women’s 50m rifle 3 positions final. She won a gold medal.
  •  Rudrankksh Patil, Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, and Divyansh Singh team set a world record in men’s 10m air rifle team (1893.7). They won a gold medal.
  • Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, Swapnil Kusale and Akhil Sheoran set a world record in men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team (1769). They won a gold medal.
  • Manu Bhaker combined with Esha Singh and Rhythm Sangwan to set a  world record in women’s 25m pistol (1759). They won a gold medal.
  • Palak Gulia set an Asian Games record in women’s 10m air pistol (242.1). She won a gold medal.
  • Kynan Chenai, Zoravar Singh Sandhu and Prithviraj Toindaman set an Asian Games record in the men’s trap team (361). They won the gold medal.

Archery 

  • Aditi Gopichand Swami set an Asian Games record in women’s compound archery (149). She won a gold medal. 
  • Jyothi Surekha Vennam equalled the Asian Games record in women’s compound archery (149). She won a gold medal.
