India finishes Paris Paralympics with a best ever medal haul of 29 Sport 9 min read

The 17th Paris Paralympics came to an end on 8th September 2024 with a glittering ceremony at the Stade de France stadium in Paris, France. The 17th Paralympics was organised by the International Paralympics Committee in the French capital city of Paris from 28 August -8 September 2024.

The 18th Summer Paralympics will be held in Los Angeles, the United States of America in 2028.

The Paralympics are held after the Olympic Games. The 33rd Summer Olympics, organised by the International Olympic Committee, was held in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. 

India ended the 2024 Paris Paralympics with a record 29 medals, breaking the record of 19 medals set at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics

Navdeep Singh’s silver medal was upgraded to gold after the gold medal winner, Iranian Beit Sayah Sadegh, was disqualified in the javelin throw F41 class.

China topped the medal tally with 220 medals, while India was at the 18th position.

Harvinder Singh was the first ever Indian archer to win a gold medal for India in a Paralympics Games. 

Preethi Pal is the first Indian women para-athlete to win two medals in track and field at the Paralympics. She won bronze medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter T 35 events at the Paris Paralympics.

Indian Achievements at the Paris Paralympics 

  • Shooter Avani Lakhera won the first gold medal for India at the Paris Paralympics. 
  • Avani Lakhera became the first Indian to defend her gold medal in the Paralympic Games. She won gold in the SH1 shooting event at the Tokyo and Paris Paralympics.
  • Sunil Antil became the first Indian male para-athlete to defend his gold medals in the Paralympic Games. He successfully defended his Tokyo title by winning the gold medal in Paris in the javelin F64 class.
  • High jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian para-athlete to win medals at three consecutive Paralympics. In the high jump T42 class event, he won the gold medal in Rio 2016, silver in Tokyo 2020, and bronze in Paris 2024.
  • India won a gold and silver medal in an athletics event in a single edition of the Paralympics for the first time. Dharambir won gold, while Parnav Soorma won the silver medal in the men's club throw F51 event.

India sends a strong 84-member para-athletes team to the Paris Paralympic. India won 29 medals- seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. The details of the winner are as follows;

At the 2024 Paris Paralympics, India participated in 12 of the 22 sporting disciplines. For the first time in the Paralympic Games, India participated in para-cycling, para-rowing, and blind judo.

In Paris, India won the most medals in athletics: 17 - gold-7, silver-6, and bronze-7.
