External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar met Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto on November 2, 2023, to strengthen India-Italy defence and security cooperation. As he neared the end of his four-day trip of Portugal and Italy, EAM Jaishankar began his visit to Rome with a meeting with the Senate. The External Affairs Minister addressed the Senate's External Affairs and Defence Commission, as well as the EU Affairs Commission and the India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group, and met representatives of the Indian community. Jaishankar  also met with his counterpart, Antonio Tajani. 

India and Italy Defence Meeting: Key Points

  • EAM Jaishankar recognised the importance of the Migration and Mobility Partnership in a global workplace.
  • During the Senate discussion, Jaishankar commended Senators Giulio Terzi and Roberto Menia for their joint effort to strengthen bilateral ties. 
  • He also asked the Indian community to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of India-Portugal diplomatic ties.  
  • He also stated that the Porto 2021 Summit would establish the European agenda for future issues.

India-Italy Ties

  • India and Italy established diplomatic relations in 1947.
  • The connection was promoted to 'Strategic Partnership' during the Prime Minister of Italy's state visit in March of this year.
  • EAM met Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Minister of Defence, and Minister for 'Made in Italy' during his visit. 
  • Italy is one of India's top five EU trading partners. 
  • Since the early 1980s, India's trade balance has been in its advantage. 
  • After the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, Italy has the third biggest Indian community in Europe. 

Mobility and Migration Partnership Agreement

  • The Mobility and Migration Partnership Agreement was recently inked by India and Italy. 
  • In Rome, Foreign Minister Dr. S Jaishankar met Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
  • The agreement wanted to allow workers, students, and professionals to migrate freely.
