EAM Jaishankar Co-chaired the 6th India-Nigeria Joint Commission meeting

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended the 6th meeting of the Joint Commission of India and Nigeria on January 22, 2024. This meeting was organized in Abuja, Nigeria. The sixth Joint Commission meeting was co-chaired  by Dr. Jaishankar and his Nigerian counterpart Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

Areas of cooperation between India and Nigeria:

On this occasion, it was agreed to strengthen people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. Also agreed to cooperate in the energy and mobility sectors. The following points were discussed to further mutual cooperation between the two countries:

  • Electricity
  • Renewable energy
  • Transportation
  • Health Care
  • Fintech 
  • Agriculture 
  • Security.
  • EAM Jaishankar also mentioned the expansion of economic cooperation, especially trade and investment, between the two countries.
  • Dr. Jaishankar said that today the global agenda is on rebalancing and promoting multipolarity and restoring the world to its natural diversity.

Jaishankar addresses Nigerian Institute of International Affairs: 

  • He addressed the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Lagos.
  • Speaking on the occasion, he said that the changes that have taken place in the last decade have enabled India to become a partner and contributor to the Global South.
  • Dr. Jaishankar highlighted that without progress in the Global South, the world will not see planetary progress.
  • A major achievement of India's G20 presidency was that it was able to bring the focus of the G20 back to the Global South.
  • The issues that matter today include Sustainable Development Goals, clean and green growth, women-led development, health, energy and food security.
  • External Affairs Minister Dr. Jaishankar also addressed the India-Nigeria Business Forum in Abuja.

Visit of Nigerian President to India:

  • Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited India on 10 September 2023 to attend the G-20 summit in New Delhi.
  • During that time too, there were fruitful talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on various areas of bilateral cooperation.
