Defense Ministry inks deal with BHEL for 16 advanced naval gun mounts

The Defense Ministry signed a contract with M/s Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Haridwar on November 28, 2023 to procure 16 Advanced Super Rapid Gun Mounts (SRGM) and accessories worth Rs 2956.89 crore for the Indian Navy.

Manufacturer of SRGM:

Upgraded Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM), which will be manufactured by M/s BHEL at its Haridwar plant. Medium-caliber point defense system against missiles and aircraft.

Features of SRGM:

It has high firepower and ensures high accuracy.
The weapon system is capable of taking action against a variety of threats.
The system has excellent performance against missiles and highly maneuverable fast attack devices.

Where will the equipment received from BHEL be installed?

The advanced SRGM to be procured from BHEL will be fitted on serving and newly built ships of the Indian Navy by M/s Mazagon Dock & Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata.

Employment will increase:

This project will generate employment of 2.5 lakh man-days over a period of five years.
Will encourage active participation of various Indian industries including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Thus, it will contribute significantly to the government's efforts to achieve 'self-reliance' in defence.

BHEL has also manufactured SRGM for the Navy in the past:

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) Haridwar has manufactured state-of-the-art Super Rapid Gun Mounting (SRGM) for the Indian Navy.
The gun is being manufactured with the technical help of LDS Company of Italy. The firepower of the state-of-the-art gun to be manufactured in BHEL will be double that of the existing gun.
BHEL Haridwar has been manufacturing Super Rapid Gun Mount 76/62 (SRGM) for the Indian Navy for the last two decades.
The institute has so far manufactured and supplied 44 SRGMs to the Navy. SRGM is the most effective weapon of the naval war ship.
At present the range of the gun is about 16 km. Gun technology is being continuously upgraded with time.
BHEL has also signed an agreement with Italian company M/s LDS for technical excellence in manufacturing state-of-the-art guns. The company is also in contention for the supply of a 30mm Naval Weapons Station (NSG).
With this modern technology the firepower of the gun will be doubled. Capable of firing advanced ammunition like Volcano and Dart.
BHEL Haridwar has been manufacturing Super Rapid Gun Mount 76/62 (SRGM) for the Indian Navy for the last two decades.
