The government of India has approved the setting up of the sixth semiconductor plant in India near Jewar International Airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Agency in Uttar Pradesh. The proposal was approved by the Union Cabinet in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and held in New Delhi on 14 May 2025.
The Government of India launched the Semiconductor Mission in December 2022 to build a strong semiconductor ecosystem in the country and to position India as the hub for electronic manufacturing.
Who will set up the plant in Jewar?
- The semiconductor plant at Jewar is a joint venture of the Taiwanese company Foxconn and HCL of India.
- The new plant is expected to attract investment of Rs 3,700 crore.
- It will produce 36 million units per month.
- This plant will manufacture display driver chips for laptops, mobile phones, automobiles, personal computers, etc.
Under Construction Five Semiconductor Units in Country
The following is the list of the five semiconductor units being set up in India that are in the construction phase.
- American Company Micron is setting up a semiconductor assembly and test facility at Sanand near Ahmedabad. It is expected to commence operation in January 2026.
- In partnership with the Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, Taiwan, Tata Electronics Private Limited is setting up a semiconductor fab unit in Dholera, Gujarat.
- Another Tata company, the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd, is setting up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam.
- CG Power, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand, is setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat.
- The Indian company Kaynes Semicon Pvt Limited is setting up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat.
Country’s first 3nm Chip Design Centres inaugurated in Noida and Bengaluru
- The country’s first 3nm chip design facilities in Noida, Uttar Pradesh and in Bengaluru, Karnataka, were inaugurated by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology.
- The facility is owned by Renesas Electronics India Private Limited, a subsidiary of Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan.
- India already has a functional 7 nm and 5 nm chip design centre.
