Continuation of the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) with an approved outlay of Rs.8139.50 crore for the period from 2022-23 to 2025-26 was also approved by the Cabinet, with two components viz. NESIDS-Road and NESIDS-Other Than Road Infrastructure (OTRI).

Key highlights of news

The decisions of the Government including merger of the erstwhile North East Road Sector Development Scheme (NERSDS) into NESIDS-Road component etc. necessitated formulation of fresh guidelines to administer and implement the restructured NESIDS during the balance period of the 15th Finance Commission.
Accordingly, the newly-formulated separate Guidelines to administer and implement both the components of the NESIDS have now been issued after having extensive consultations with the stakeholders and detailed discussions internally.
The objective of the NESIDS is to support infrastructure development in identified sectors including connectivity in the North Eastern States.

About North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme” (NESIDS)

North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme” (NESIDS) was approved by the Government of India as a new Central Sector Scheme on 15.12.2017.
Under the Scheme guidelines of NESIDS, 100% centrally funding is provided to the State Governments of North Eastern Region for the projects of physical infrastructure relating to water supply, power and connectivity enhancing tourism and Social infrastructure relating to primary and secondary sectors of education and health.
Earlier the period of the Scheme was 2017-18 to 2019-20.
The funds are released in two installments of 40% and 60%. Initially a token amount of Rs. 10 lakh are released and balance amount of first installment are released after receipt of letter of award of the work.
