The three day 2023 UNCITRAL South Asia Conference was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice D Y Chandrachud, in New Delhi on 15 September 2023.
The Conference was jointly hosted by the Union Ministry of External Affairs ,the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the UNCITRAL National Coordination Committee for India.
The Conference was attended by the Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh. Attorney General for India, R Venkataramani, Secretary of UNCITRAL, Ms Anna Joubin-Bret.
There was wide ranging discussion on the digital economy, Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and access to credit, insolvency, investor-state dispute settlement reform, international commercial arbitration, and mediation.
The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law is the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law.
It specialises in commercial law. It aims to modernise the commercial law of the countries in the world and harmonise the rules on international business.
It was set up in 1966 by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly passed in 1966.
At present, 70 countries of the United Nations are members of the UNCITRAL.
