3rd Adv Estimate: India's Foodgrain Output Hits 3322.98 LMT in 2024-25 Agriculture 4 min read

The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare has released the third advance estimate for the 2024-25 agricultural marketing season. Foodgrains production is estimated to hit a record 3322.98 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) in 2024-25, compared to 3322.98 LMT in 2023-24, a growth rate of 6.5%.

The agriculture marketing season in  India is from June to July.

According to Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, record foodgrain production is due to the adoption of technology, robust policy support, and improved agri-infrastructure.

Reason for Record production in 2024-25

  • Record production was achieved in rice, maize, groundnut, wheat and soybean.
  • Favourable monsoon and well-distributed rainfall across major crop-growing states.
  • It helped improve soil moisture, promote healthy crop development, and create optimal conditions for cultivation.
  • It led to the expansion of the area under cultivation during the kharif season.
  • Intermittent rains during the Rabi season boosted the yield of Rabi crops like wheat, etc.

Break-up of Agricultural Production in 2024–25 

Following is the break up of the foodgrain, pulse,oilseeds, sugarcane, jute and cotton production as per the 3rd advance estimate for the 2024-25 agricultural marketing season.

Foodgrains production 

Total Foodgrains– 3539.59 LMT as compared to 3322.98 LMT in 2023-24, 

  • Rice -1490.74 LMT (Record) as compared to 1378.25 LMT in 2023-24
  • Wheat – 1175.07 LMT (Record) as compared to 1132.92 LMT in 2023-24
  • Maize – 422.81 LMT (Record)
  • Shree Anna– 180.15 LMT, an increase of 4.43 LMT from 2023-24
  • Nutri/Coarse Cereals- 621.40 LMT, an increase of 52.04 LMT from 2023-24.

Pulse Production 

Total Pulse production- 252.38 LMT as compared to 242.46 LMT in 2023-24

  • Moong - 38.19 LMT as compared to 31.03 LMT in 2023-24
  • Tur – 35.61 LMT as compared to 34.17 LMT in 2023-24
  • Gram – 113.37 LMT

Oilseeds Production 

Total Oilseeds production - 426.09 LMT as compared to 396.69 LMT

  • Groundnut – 118.96 LMT (Record) as compared to 101.8 LMT in 2023-24
  • Soybean – 151.80 LMT (Record) as compared to 130.62 LMT in 2023-24
  • Rapeseed & Mustard – 126.06 LMT

Other Crops 

  • Sugarcane – 4501.16 LMT
  • Cotton – 306.92 Lakh Bales (170 Kgs. each)
  • Jute – 84.33 Lakh Bales (180 Kgs. each)
